Materials needed to build a light rack:
  • 6 10'lengths of " PVC pipe
  • 6 " PVC caps
  • 24 " PVC T's
  • 6 " PVC L's
  • 6 " PVC 4-ways
  • Hacksaw
  • PVC cement
  • 2 48" fluorescent light fixtures and bulbs
Start the project by cutting the 10' lengths of PVC into smaller sections. You will need to cut 24 3" sections of pipe, 12 18" sections, 12 24" sections, and nine 7" sections.

To form the base of the light rack, connect the 7" sections of pipe together using the T-shaped connectors. Use three 7" sections of PVC pipe for every two T connectors. Place caps on the open ends of the 7" sections. Next, insert a 3" section of PVC pipe in the open end of each T connector. Apply cement to both the pipe and the connectors.

The next pieces you assemble will hold the base together. Connect two of the 24" inch sections of pipe together using one of the four-way connectors, again brushing the connections with glue. Next, attach T shaped connectors to the open ends of the pipe. You will need two pieces like this to complete the base, and an additional four pieces like this later in the project.

Next, glue all the components together as shown.

The middle portion of the rack calls for three more the pieces you made with the four way connector and the 24" sections of pipe, as well as six T connectors that each have two 3" pieces of pipe glued at right angles to one another.

Connect all of the components together as shown using PVC glue.

Insert an 18" piece of pvc pipe into each of the base's open ends. Do not glue these pieces together.

The middle portion of the rack attaches to the legs as shown. Again, do not glue these pieces together.

The final part of the rack consists of one more of the long pieces that have a four-way connector in the middle and a T connector on each end, and six L connectors, each with a 3" inch piece of pipe cemented in one end. Insert an L connector into each of the longer components open ends and glue them in place. All of the open ends of the L connectors should be pointing downward.

Insert the remaining 18" pieces of pipe into the open ends of the middle portion of the rack. Attach the top portion of the rack to the legs. By not cementing any of the legs to the base, middle, or top of the rack you will be able to break down the rack when not in use.

The finished rack will accommodate two 48" fluorescent light fixtures and four flats.
