Passiflora incarnata
( Maypop )
| This Southeastern native is the hardiest of the passion flowers, and is able to survive temperatures that drop to -10 degrees F.
This deciduous vine dies back to ground after the first hard frost. Most stunning are the flowers which range from white to lavender to purple. Fruit are edible, and it readily starts from the seed it produces as well as underground roots. A great addition to any sun, to part shade, garden. Prune out inner growth periodically to keep plant open and healthy. This hardy climber does so by tendrils and is a favorite food of caterpillars and fritillary butterfly. Wonderful over a trellis as a shade-providing option or as a slope stablizer, tropical selections can be grown as houseplants in a very bright window. |
